Until next Sunday, July 20, the Velódromo Nacional in Sangalhos is once again the stage for the UEC Juniors and Under-23 Track European Championships – one of the most prestigious events on the calendar of the Union Européenne de Cyclisme (UEC).

A total of 487 riders from 30 countries are competing, since Tuesday, for 44 European titles, in a high-level technical environment that has consistently contributed to the emergence of some of the sport’s biggest stars.

But this event is also a sign of a long-term commitment to the future. As part of that vision, a symbolic tradition was once again upheld: the planting of a new tree next to the Velódromo Nacional, under the scope of the UEC Forest initiative.

This environmental project, which was born precisely in Anadia in 2022, aims to mark each European Championship organised under the UEC’s umbrella with the planting of a tree – a symbolic yet meaningful gesture that expresses the sport’s commitment to sustainability and environmental preservation.

Since then, over 60 trees have been planted in 15 countries. In addition to hosting the very first UEC Forest tree, Portugal now has six trees planted around the Velódromo Nacional. The sixth was planted on Wednesday evening, during a ceremony attended by the UEC President Enrico Della Casa, the President of the Portuguese Cycling Federation, Cândido Barbosa, the Mayor of Anadia, Maria Teresa Cardoso, and the President of Turismo Centro de Portugal.

The tree planted this Wednesday is tree number 64 of the UEC Forest initiative and is located near Entrance 2 of the Velódromo Nacional.
